Our Background and Mission Statement - Someone Cares

SomeOne Cares was set-up in 1989 by two women who wanted to provide more help for those affected by sexual abuse. The name comes directly from clients in those early days as they would often say, "It's good to know someone cares."

We provide individual counselling to those affected by abuse. We feel this is the most effective way of helping people come to terms with their issues, as each person is affected in their own individual way.

Over 20 counsellors dedicate time to SomeOne Cares - you can find out about some of them here. In 2008 we were honoured when Philippa Tomson agreed to become our patron.

We have helped hundreds of clients to lead a more effective life, and over 40 former volunteers have gone on to take up paid work in the caring professions the past 5 years.

Throughout the years we have tried to provide a service that recognises that abuse is a difficult area of care, one which cannot be hurried as the issues involved are so complex and usually very difficult for the client to work with. Often we are working with clients who have been neglected by the care system or with people who have little faith in the statutory services.

Our Mission Statement

Because we do not charge for our counselling services, SomeOne Cares has been forced to survive on very limited funds throughout the years. Lately however, we have benefited from significant support from the following funders:

  • Newcastle Mental Health NHS Trust
  • Newcastle Social Services
  • Comic Relief
  • British Telecom
  • Newcastle Foundation
  • Northern Rock
  • VODA
  • VONNE
  • CVS Newcastle
